Description :   Length: 17 cm (with a tail of 9 cm), weight: 28 g. Body is covered with stiff and spiny hair. Pelage is reddish-grey above and white below. Tail is scaled. 
     
Habitat :   Rocky areas, woods and thickets. 
     
Behaviour :   Nocturnal. Shelters in rock crevices. Lives singly or in small groups. 
     
Diet :   Seeds, berries, insects, millipedes, centipedes.  
     
Life history :   Females give birth to a litter of 2 to 5 young.
